Climate Change, Australia Grants AU$45 Mn
Australia, through its Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, provides AU$45 million worth of financial assistance to Indonesia in Bali, December 9, as an effort to alleviate the impacts of climate change upon the archipelago. Rudd said Australia praised on Indonesia's strong leadership in dealing with climate change. The grant is part of the partnership between the two countries, said Rudd, in trying to seriously reduce emission from deforestation and forest degradation. "It is important to cut down emission from deforestation and forest degradation of which level reaches 18 percent of total world emission and 60 of of emission level in Indonesia," Rudd stated today, Dec 9, in a press release. The AU$45 million fund is a portion of the total fund aiming at climate change prevention of AU$599 million. The fund is divided into two: AU$30 million will be used for extending the pilot project in Kalimantan and accelerate collaboration on the national carbon accounting system. Meanwhile, AU$15 million will be utilized to support any effort made by the Indonesian government in adapting with climate change. "Indonesian islands are prone to the impacts of climate change. The [financial] assistance sees the importance of the [climate] issue for Indonesia," said Rudd. Rudd will be attending the Bali Democracy Forum under the office of Australian Foreign Affairs Minister.
